Barclays' chief executive, C.S. Venkatakrishnan, has a sweet way of putting it. He calls AI the “icing on the cake” of the bank's technology spending. The staff may taste it differently. Barclays said Thursday, Oct. 22 it's cutting 5,000 jobs, 5% of its workforce. That's one worker in 20. Michael Hennessey reported it in the Journal.
The bank says the goal is a simpler company, with AI doing more of the work. About 1,000 of the cuts came in the first half of 2026. The other 4,000 land in the second half. Barclays (BCS) has company. This year Germany's Commerzbank and Norway's DNB both laid out plans to cut staff and lean harder on AI. Not every bank boss has said it gracefully. In May, Standard Chartered's Bill Winters said AI would let his bank swap out “lower-value human capital.” He later took it back and said sorry.
The numbers behind the cuts are plain. Barclays cut £201 million, about $269.2 million, of lasting costs in the third quarter. It plans £300 million more in the fourth. Finance chief Anna Cross said cuts so far this year run about double the level of the past two years. The quarter itself was mixed. Pretax profit rose to £2.32 billion from £2.08 billion a year earlier. Analysts wanted £2.42 billion. Fixed-income trading, the bond and lending desks, sank, and the CEO called it disappointing. Net profit rose 13% to £1.65 billion. The bank set a £500 million buyback of its own shares, below the £579 million analysts expected. The U.S.-listed shares slipped 59 cents to $22.01 on Thursday.
Growing and cutting at once
Thursday's paper carried a second cut, at eBay (EBAY). It plans to lay off about 9% of its workforce, about 1,000 people, Kelly Cloonan reports. It's the company's second round this year, after a cut of about 6.5% announced in February. eBay had about 12,300 employees at the end of last year. Here's the part that matters for anyone with a job. eBay's revenue is growing. It lifted its full-year outlook in August. It bought Depop from Etsy this year. It still cut. Layoffs often came with bad news. Now they can come with good news too.
Our read
Career, with Cash Flow, M5, underneath. We don't own Barclays. eBay is held at weight in 4 books. Nothing added. For investors, the Barclays results say bank profits still swing with the trading desks, and AI is a cost story before it's a growth story. For workers, it's simpler. AI-driven cuts are now stated policy at big banks, and growth no longer protects a job. A 5% cut sounds small. One in 20 isn't small to the one.
Here's the connection to your own money. A layoff lands first on your emergency fund. This week, count the months of expenses you hold in cash. Six is the number we'd like to see for a single-income household. Then pull up the employee handbook and find the severance policy, the notice period and what happens to unused vacation. If you carry a 401(k) loan, read what happens to it when you leave, because the balance can come due sooner than you'd think. Doing this while you're employed is the whole point. You pack the go-bag while the sky is still clear. If you'd like us to walk the handbook with you, it's a quick item for your next review.
