December crude settled at $103.27. Exxon, Chevron and Conoco hit 52-week highs, and gold fell under $4,000.

Crude is up 79.85% this year and the energy fund XLE 55.1%. Gold is down 7.73%. Both hedges are doing their jobs. The futures curve prices December 2028 oil at $73.66, so the hedge stays at its planned size.

Energy stocks set 52-week highs Friday while gold slid under $4,000. The two hedges pulled in opposite directions.
In one line: Oil passed $103 and the energy hedge hit new highs while gold slid, which is what a pair of hedges looks like when one is working.

Friday was a bad day for most stocks and a great one for oil. The December crude contract, the main U.S. oil price, settled at $103.27, up $3.80. ExxonMobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX) and ConocoPhillips (COP) all set 52-week highs. Gold went the other way and closed at $3,991.10. Most of the market went that way too. On the NYSE, 1,701 stocks fell and 990 rose.

The push came from the Gulf again. Traders bet on renewed fighting in Iran, Hannah Erin Lang writes in the Journal's week wrap, and the global benchmark climbed back to where it stood in April. The paper prints no Brent price, so we'll stick to the New York contract. December crude is up 79.85% this year and 67.92% over 52 weeks. Its 52-week low was $55.27. Diesel futures rose too. Natural gas went the other way, down 5.58% Friday and 15.28% on the week.

The oil stocks did what oil stocks do. ExxonMobil closed at $183.21, up $4.98, and touched $183.75. It's up 52.24% this year. Chevron closed at $233.21, up $6.53, and is up 53.01%. ConocoPhillips closed at $150.80, up $5.17, and is up 61.09%. EOG Resources (EOG) rose $5.07 to $163.03. The sector fund XLE gained 2.60% Friday and is up 55.1% this year. One refiner missed the party. Valero (VLO) slipped $7.00 to $419.28, though it's still up 157.56% in 2026. For the week, the energy sector rose 1.55% while the S&P 500 fell 0.47%.

Gold is the hedge that's down

Gold settled at $3,991.10, down $51.70 on the day and 4.05% on the week. It's down 7.73% this year, and about 25% under its 52-week high of $5,318.40. Silver fell 5.76% for the week. So the two hedges in the books pulled in opposite directions. That isn't a failure. A hedge that only goes up is a bet with a nicer name. The futures table has one more thing to say. It lists prices for oil delivered in later years, and those point down. Oil for December 2027 settled at $80.52, and December 2028 at $73.66. The market's own guess is that $103 doesn't last.

Our read

This is Investments/Risk, IN04. Energy is the hedge in the books, the slice meant to gain when an oil shock hurts the rest, and it's held at weight. Chevron is in 37 books, ExxonMobil in 34, ConocoPhillips in 17, EOG in 15 and XLE in 8. Valero is in 12, at 3.0% in ten of them. Gold, through IAU, is in 46. Nothing added. We said it Friday and the weekend table says it louder. The energy hedge earns its keep on a day like this one. Friday's table also says why we won't add to it. Traders price oil at $80.52 for December 2027 and $73.66 for December 2028. A hedge sized for $103 forever is a bet on a war that lasts.

Your connection is the energy slice in your own stocks. A slice set at the start of the year has grown. XLE alone is up 55.1%. This week, write down what share of your stock money energy is today and what share you meant it to be. If it has drifted well past the target, trimming back to the plan is the usual discipline. Bring the change to your next review. Gold is the other side of the same check. It's down this year, and that's the one most people are tempted to drop. You keep both umbrellas. You don't know which way the rain comes in.

What It Means For Your Portfolio

Hold. Keep energy and gold at their planned sizes.

Oil at $103.27 sent the energy hedge to new highs while gold fell, and the 2028 futures price of $73.66 says why the hedge stays at its planned size.

General planning principles, not advice for anyone in particular. Decide what share of your stocks energy should be and write it down. When a run pushes it well past that share, rebalancing back is the discipline.

Keep the hedge that's down too. Gold fell 4.05% this week and 7.73% this year, and that's the one a plan is most tempted to drop.
