In 2018, Jay-Z put it on a record. He'd turned down the Super Bowl, and the league needed him more than he needed it. On Monday night the NFL announced he'll headline the 2027 halftime show. Nobody had to talk him into it. His own company, Roc Nation, has run the league's music strategy since 2019. As the Journal's Elias Leight put it, "he effectively booked himself."
The halftime show is a 13-minute concert on the biggest stage in American music. Kendrick Lamar's 2025 show averaged more than 133 million viewers on TV and online. Nielsen calls that the record. Roc Nation changed the guest list. Before it came in, the slot went to classic rockers and pop stars. Since 2019, Latin acts have had the stage, and hip-hop most of all. Dr. Dre in 2022. Lamar in 2025. Now Jay-Z in 2027.
Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday that when the league first signed Roc Nation, he had one request. He asked that Jay-Z "take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him." Jay-Z called the run "a dream come true." Some conservatives have grumbled about recent performers. The audience showed up anyway, and Lamar's set a record.
The man who owns the booking desk
Here's the part we like. Jay-Z's last solo album, 4:44, came out in 2017. His U.S. album sales top 71 million, by the RIAA's count, but the new material stopped years ago. This year was a victory lap. An eight-part HBO series with producer Rick Rubin. Three shows at Yankee Stadium in July for the 30th anniversary of his first album. Then the halftime call, from a company he owns. He didn't audition. He didn't wait by the phone. He built the thing that does the hiring.
Our read
This is a Career story, and it's the oldest lesson in money. There are two ways to get paid. You can sell your time, or you can own the thing that buys it. Most of us spend our whole working lives on the first one. Jay-Z did the first for years. Then he built the second. The Super Bowl didn't change its mind about him. He changed who was making the decision. You don't need a record label to copy the idea. An employee stock plan, the match in your 401(k), a small stake in the business you work in, a rental that pays whether you show up or not. Each one is a piece of the booking desk. Apple (AAPL), which sponsors the show, is held at weight in 24 books. Nothing added.
The one thing in your plan this touches is the ownership line. Add up what you own that pays you without your labor. Shares, a business stake, a rental, even the match in your retirement account. Then check this week whether you're leaving any of it on the table. An unclaimed 401(k) match or a stock plan you never enrolled in is a gig you turned down. Jay-Z said no once and made sure he'd get asked again. That's a ten-minute check, and it's the kind we do in a review. The roof you fix in October is the one that holds in January.
