The most important subject in American longevity research is, at this very moment, probably chasing a tennis ball. The Dog Aging Project is testing rapamycin — a drug researchers hope can slow aging itself — in pet dogs. It is the first real-world trial of an anti-aging drug in any species, ever. This is a bigger deal than it sounds, and it already sounds big. Longevity science has spent decades producing results in mice, worms, and yeast — creatures with famously little to say about a human retirement. Dogs are different. They share our homes, our air, our couches, and a suspicious amount of our dinner. If a drug slows aging in the family retriever, that is evidence gathered in our own kitchen.
The business world is right behind the science. A startup called Loyal plans to seek conditional FDA approval next year for a dog-longevity drug. Read that again: a regulator will formally consider a medicine whose entire purpose is more years of dog.
Why do the dogs go first? Partly because dogs age fast. A decade of dog life squeezes the whole experiment into a span one study can actually finish. Their results will arrive while human trials are still filling out paperwork.
The Labrador clue
This field already has one famous result, and it came from dinner portions. In a long-running Purina study of Labradors, dogs fed 25% fewer calories lived a median 1.8 years longer. In Labrador terms, that is an enormous slice of extra life — earned not with a molecule but with a measuring cup.
The biology underneath involves IGF-1 and insulin sensitivity — the same body chemistry researchers believe helps govern human aging. That overlap is the entire point. The dogs are not a cute sideshow to longevity science. They are the opening act.
Humans are rehearsing
Meanwhile, the humans in the household are practicing for their own longer lives, in a very 2026 way. Roughly a third of adults now use AI chatbots for health advice, and 19% use them to interpret lab results, according to the health research group KFF. OpenAI says its users ask more than 300 million health questions every week.
Every week. Three hundred million. The appetite for more healthy years is not a niche hobby. It may be the largest consumer demand on Earth, and the tools keep getting better at feeding it.

Here is where the leash meets the road. Every credible signal in this field points the same direction: human lifespans keep stretching, and science keeps finding new ways to stretch them. The breakthroughs arrive quietly — a dog trial here, a diet study there — and then all at once.
