Nvidia’s $235 Billion Buyback Authorization Is Not a $235 Billion Gift
The board authorized another $150 billion. That is permission to buy, not a check in the mail — and it is not a reason to size up Nvidia here.

Key Points
Nvidia (NVDA) said Monday its board approved a $150 billion increase to the share-repurchase program, bringing total authorization to $235 billion — the largest U.S. stock buyback on record, the Journal reports.
The new authorization eclipses Apple’s (AAPL) $110 billion buyback unveiled in May 2024, and comes four months after Nvidia’s board added $80 billion to the program.
Nvidia’s market capitalization tops $5.4 trillion, the largest of any company in the world. Shares rose 1.7% in Monday trading. Every other Magnificent Seven name finished that day in the red, the paper notes.
Heard on the Street: announcing a buyback can add a similar-size chunk of market value in a morning, which is the double-count. A dollar you already own as a shareholder is not more valuable when it moves to a bank account. Nvidia trades at about 25 times this fiscal year’s forecast earnings.
S&P 500 buybacks hit a record last year, topping $1 trillion, even as buyback yields were among the lowest in recent history because prices rose faster than the cash returned.

Authorization is not execution. A $235 billion permission slip is not a $235 billion dividend.
In one line: Nvidia authorized the largest U.S. buyback on record. That is not a reason to add the stock, and it is not cash in a shareholder’s pocket until shares are actually retired.
Nvidia, flush from the AI boom, said Monday its board had approved a $150 billion increase to the repurchase program. Total authorization: $235 billion, the largest U.S. stock buyback on record, the Journal reports. It beats Apple’s $110 billion from May 2024. It comes four months after Nvidia’s own board stacked on another $80 billion. The stock rose 1.7% Monday. The rest of the Magnificent Seven finished in the red. Market cap: more than $5.4 trillion, biggest on the planet.
Heard on the Street’s point is the one that belongs on a kitchen table. A buyback announcement can tack a similar-size chunk onto the market value in a morning. That is the double-count. A dollar you already own as a shareholder is not more valuable when it moves from the company’s cash to your brokerage. Buybacks can still mean something: confidence that the firm has cash left after building the business, and a smaller temptation to spend it on something dumb. Heard notes Nvidia has backstopped customers to the tune of hundreds of billions. Shareholders still have to decide if they are better off after the repurchase, not after the press release.
A record authorization on a $5.4 trillion giant is a smaller payout than it looks
Heard puts Nvidia at about 25 times this fiscal year’s forecast earnings. Operating margin has doubled in four years while sales grew 15-fold — those are the paper’s figures, not a house multiple. Even the largest buyback in history, Heard says, falls short of the percentage payout many blue-chips already run, because the denominator is enormous. S&P 500 buybacks topped $1 trillion last year and still produced one of the lowest buyback yields in recent history, because prices rose faster than the cash came back. Authorization is a ceiling. It is not a schedule.
Our read
Investments (IN04): the house is not adding Nvidia. A 1.7% pop on a permission slip is not a new position. If the stock is already in a book at its weight, that is the weight. Buybacks do not change the three conditions for new equity money, and they do not change that the September falsifier — a record S&P close above 7,798.99 before Oct. 2 — did not print. Quarter ended 1.89% short at 7,651.54.
If a statement shows a single-name AI line that has grown into a meal, the useful sitting is concentration, not celebration. Fifteen minutes with the weights. You don’t wait for the next authorization to notice the plate.
What It Means For Your Portfolio
Hold — authorization is not a reason to add; keep the weight you already have
Nvidia authorized a $235 billion buyback. That is a ceiling, not a check, and it is not a house add.
General planning principles, not advice for anyone in particular. A buyback authorization is permission, not a dividend. The cash is still the company’s until shares are actually retired, and a morning pop is not a plan. If Nvidia is already in the book, the question is weight, not whether the board wrote a large number.
Do not size a household equity sleeve off a repurchase headline. Run the concentration: one name, one theme, one quarter of the statement. If that line has become the meal, that is the sitting — before the next authorization lands.
